Hire me—

For a reading:

I love readings, not just because I enjoy telling stories, but because they’re a chance to gather in community and build collective power by celebrating our rich tapestry of experiences. My readings are crafted specifically for the communities I have been invited to engage with—from universities to private events—using excerpts from my award-winning books High-Risk Homosexual and Alligator Tears to launch larger conversations on subjects such as machismo, finding pride in The South, Latinidad, and the American Dream.

I have been invited to read by such institutions as New York University, Stanford University, The University of Mississippi, The University of California, Lehman City College, Utah Humanities Book Festival, GoPro, and The L.A. Times Festival of Books.

To teach:

I have been an educator for 7+ years, with experience teaching memoir-writing workshops/leading creative nonfiction retreats for Hugo House, Catapult, Tin House, The Writer’s Club, the Antioch Low Res MFA, and the Lambda Literary Writer’s Retreat.

"I really wasn't sure of myself walking into the class. But Edgar's encouragement really gave me the go-ahead to just get my ideas out on the page, in all their candid messiness, in a way that I haven't been able to accomplish otherwise. I've been talking to all my friends about what a cool and exciting time I had writing about the topics I did and getting the chance to experiment in new forms and formats. Our discussions about stories, whether an established author's or one another's, really forced me to sit down and break things apart more meticulously than I've been accustomed to doing. I'm so excited to keep returning to the tools I picked up in class—I already know they're gonna stick around for the long-haul!"

— Patrick Mullen-Coyoy, poet and former student
